Homer, AK – Homer will celebrate 100 years of Alaska aviation with an air show, the chance to see vintage aircraft, talk to pilots and to learn about aviation history on Friday, May 24th. Bald Mountain Air Service (BMAS) is hosting the Homer events including an arrival of the Centennial Pilots at the Homer Airport at 1 p.m., and a meet and greet and community gathering at the BMAS Hangar, 3758 FAA Road, from 1:30 to 4 p.m.
The Alaska Air Show Association has organized the Alaska Aviation Centennial Celebration, May 9 though July 14 across the state. The event begins on May 9th in Cordova, will visit western Alaska, the Arctic and the Interior before it ends at the Alaska Aviation Museum in Anchorage on July 14. The festivities recognize the first flight in Alaska in 1913, and honor the men and women who blazed the trail for aviation.
The event in Homer and others across the state include the chance to see historic aircraft, meet the pilots and to learn about Alaska’s aviation history via mobile displays. At the Homer Airport, Centennial pilots will conduct aerial demonstrations featuring select warbirds and vintage aircraft (weather and traffic permitting), including fly-bys and flying in a “race track” pattern to commemorate the first flight in 1913. Get close-up and personal with the aircraft and pilots during a “meet and greet.” Get a free poster for pilot autographs and view panels from the traveling museum exhibit featuring the First Flight and significant or historical pilots. Complimentary sandwiches and drinks will be provided by Homer Air, Pathfinder Aviation and Maritime Helicopters.

Anchorage, AK – May 15, 2013 – Sitka basket and textile weaver Teri Rofkar has been named the 2013 Rasmuson Distinguished Artist. The $40,000 award, announced today in Anchorage, recognizes an artist with stature and a history of creative excellence. Rofkar is the tenth Alaskan artist to receive the award, and she joins a prestigious list of previous winners including Kes Woodward (2012), Ray Troll (2011), John Luther Adams (2010), Nathan Jackson (2009), Ronald Senungetuk (2008), Rie Munoz (2007), Delores Churchill (2006), John Haines (2005) and Sylvester Ayek (2004).
“Teri Rofkar has lectured, demonstrated, taught, encouraged and promoted Tlingit weaving across the country,” said Diane Kaplan, Rasmuson Foundation president and CEO. “Not only is she an artist of amazing talent and stature, she is also the most delightful, generous and patient person you probably will ever meet.”

Ten years ago, the Rasmuson Foundation launched the Individual Artist Awards to honor the merit and significance of lives dedicated to serious artistic exploration. So far, the program has awarded 303 grants totaling more than $2.3 million to Alaska artists. This week, after receiving 366 applications, the Foundation will announce the award of 36 awards to artists from 14 different communities across Alaska. They include literary artists, painters, playwrights, photographers, poets, carvers, choreographers, novelists filmmakers, song writers and more.
Awards announced on Wednesday will include Project Awards ($7,500), Artist Fellowship Awards ($18,000) and one Distinguished Artist award ($40,000). Nearly all of this year’s winning artists, including the Distinguished Artist recipient, will be present at Wednesday’s announcement ceremony.
The Rasmuson Foundation Individual Artist Awards are part of a multi-year initiative to support the culture of art, the vibrancy of our communities and art itself.
