Thomas Center is Alaska’s First Faith-Based, Supported Housing for Active Seniors

Alaska seniors now have a new, exciting option for housing in Anchorage. St. Mary’s Episcopal Housing Company held a dedication and celebration of the opening of Thomas Center for Senior Leadership this past weekend. The new community, which includes 14 efficiency, one- and two-bedroom apartments for rent, is located on the St. Mary’s Episcopal Church campus at the corner of Lake Otis Parkway and Tudor Road in Anchorage.

“Alaska’s seniors have knowledge, experience and a unique perspective on the world that we hope to foster within the new Thomas Center community,” said Rev. Michael Burke of St. Mary’s Episcopal Church.

The design of Thomas Center encourages social engagement among residents. While they can enjoy complete privacy in an apartment, they also will receive two-meals-a-day and share common areas like a spacious lounge, outdoor gardens, a crafts room and exercise facility. An on-site manager and resident assistant will provide 24-hour assistance. Residents will have the flexibility to employ individual caregivers, if needed, but the idea is that most will live independently, and help each other as needed.

While Thomas Center is a faith-based community, there is no requirement for anyone to subscribe to any religious tradition, or to be a member of any religious organization. Thomas Center was envisioned by the late Tay Thomas, as well as Carol Phillips, two women who felt that a new living community that provides support for elders to maintain an active and vibrant lifestyle during their senior years was needed. Tay and others worked for 14 years to acquire land for Thomas Center, and start up funds were donated by Lowell Jr. and Tay Thomas. Later, a Rasmuson Foundation grant helped to pay for furniture and equipment in the common area.

Construction of Thomas Center began in August 2014 and was completed in early November 2015. The building was designed by Olberding White Architects and the main contractor for construction of the facility was The Petersen Group. Construction management was provided by ProDev.
