This is the 24th year for the Great Alaska Beer & Barleywine Festival. The event offers three sessions for participants to taste several of 300 selections of beers, meads and ciders from 70 brewers. The event also has live entertainment. More than 200 Alaskans volunteer to work the festival each year. There currently are 33 breweries in Alaska, with seven more in the planning stages. Two new Alaska brewers are debuting at the Festival this year: Girdwood Brewing Company and Cynosure Brewery.
People story ideas:
This year’s Guest Master Brewer is Jerry Vietz, Director of Brewing and Brewmaster at Unibroue. He has worked in the cider and wine industries before moving into the beer world. He has automated production processes, developed new brews and handled re-fermentation projects. He’s Unibroue’s brand ambassador on the international stage.
Tore Nybo, Founder of Nogne O, is a Norwegian who joined Nogne 0 in 2004 as a 50 percent partner. He resigned as CEO this year to concentrate on export and more beer related work and to find a new hobby. He’s this year’s special guest at the Festival.
John Burkett has worked the Festival every year until 2018. He was the Craft Beer Manager for Odom, and helped build the GABBWF into what it is today. This year, he won’t have to work, but he’ll be there to enjoy the festivities and to drink!
