Kenai River King Salmon Escapement Goal Predicted Not To Be Met For The First Time Ever, Yet East Side Set Net Fishery Remains Open

Kenai River Sportfishing Association (KRSA) is extremely concerned that the lower end of the escapement goal range for late-run king salmon in the Kenai River will not be achieved. Today, the board of directors of the state’s largest sportfishing organization unanimously approved a vote of no confidence in the Alaska Department of Fish & Game (ADF&G) Commissioner Cora Campbell and fishery division directors.

18th Annual Kenai River Classic Raises Important Money for Fisheries Conservation and Angler Education

More than 100 Alaskans, policymakers and business leaders participated in the annual Kenai River Sportfishing Association (KRSA) Kenai River Classic this week. Each gained a better understanding of the importance of fish conservation and habitat restoration on the Kenai, and at the same time helped to support the local economy. The three-day fundraising event, held July 8-10, contributed more than $500,000 to the Kenai/Soldotna economy thorugh participant lodging, food, guides, tours and transportation.

In Case You Missed Out: Girl Scouts Offer One Last Chance to Buy Girl Scout Cookies in Anchorage Next Week

Did the little Girl Scout who used to live next door graduate or forget to take your cookie order this year? Have you already eaten your hidden stash of Girl Scout cookies, but wish you had more? You’re in luck – but act fast.

Girl Scouts of Alaska has a few more cases of Samoas, Thin Mints and Tagalongs. The cookies will be sold by the case on a first-come, first-served basis next week, May 9-13. Just come to the Girl Scouts of Alaska office at 3911 Turnagain Blvd. East between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m., Monday through Friday, May 9 to 13. Cookies cost $48 per case, and each case has 12 boxes of cookies. Of every case sold, $36.12 stays right here in Alaska and is used to fulfill the Girl Scout mission to build girls of courage, confidence, and character, who make the world a better place.

Anchorage-based Photographer Carl Johnson has won the “Environmental Issues” award in the 2010 Windland Smith Rice International Awards sponsored by Nature’s Best Photography magazine. Johnson’s photo “Wolf Tracks on Ice” is one of 18 award winners that went on display at the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History April 16.

Free Tax Preparation Helps Keep Hard-Earned Money in Alaskans’ Pockets

During tough times and cold winters, every dollar counts for Alaskans. That’s why United Way of Anchorage and partners like AARP-Tax Aide offer free tax preparation for qualified Alaskans each tax season, keeping millions of dollars in the pockets of hardworking families and in our community.

This tax season, Alaskans can take advantage of free tax preparation at eight sites around Anchorage and at three Super Saturday events. Last tax season, nearly 6,000 Alaskans filed from free local tax preparation sites, saving more than $600,000 in preparation costs while being guided to an average of $1,925 in Earned Income Tax Credits (EITC) and ultimately receiving more than $9.6 million in returns.

ANCHORAGE – A “YES” vote on Prop B is a yes to Alaska jobs, the economy and to the importance of education in the state. That’s the message the Y.E.S. on Prop B campaign is beginning to share this week as it seeks to educate voters before the election on Nov. 2.

“Prop B revitalizes three K-12 rural schools, improves University facilities and has no impact on local property taxes,” said Arliss Sturgulewski, co-chair of the Yes on Prop B campaign.  “We encourage voters to get educated about this ballot initiative, and how important its passage is to everyone in the state.”

ANCHORAGE – Prepare to be wowed Anchorage! The biggest circus ever to come to the state will perform in Alaska Oct. 2-21, 2010, including six shows at Dena’ina Center in Anchorage on Oct. 16 and 17th. Tickets for Anchorage shows are now on sale.

PALMER – The Alaska State Fair has completed a review of the actions taken last Thursday, August 26, when Sidney Hill was arrested after he caused a disturbance on the fairgrounds while carrying a large political sign.  An edited video of Hill’s protest and subsequent arrest was posted on YouTube. Hill has since been charged with three misdemeanor crimes.

Kids Catch Plenty of Salmon at 4th Annual Kenai River Jr. Classic

You don’t always catch fish on the Kenai River, but today, that wasn’t a problem for 140 Southcentral Alaska kids. Youth from the Armed Services YMCA and Boys & Girls Clubs of the Kenai Peninsula participated in the 4th Annual Kenai River Jr. Classic. They caught more than 150 silver and pink salmon. Organized by the Kenai River Sportfishing Association (KRSA), the annual event aims to expose kids to sportfishing, and to learn about the river’s ecology, fish and safe boating.

Semco Energy and MidAmerican Announce Plans for Natural Gas Storage

ANCHORAGE – Cook Inlet Natural Gas Storage Alaska, LLC (CINGSA), a joint venture between SEMCO Energy, Inc. (SEMCO) and MidAmerican Energy Holdings Company (MidAmerican), announced today it has filed a certificate application with the Regulatory Commission of Alaska (RCA) to construct, own and operate an underground natural gas storage system in the Cook Inlet region of Southcentral Alaska.

17th Annual Kenai River Classic A Success

For the 17th year, residents of the Kenai/Soldotna area teamed up with Kenai River Sportfishing Association (KRSA) to present a successful annual Kenai River Classic.

Money raised during the event, through sponsorships, participation fees and the banquet and auction will go toward habitat restoration, angler access, education, fisheries management and research projects along the Kenai River, and other Southcentral Alaska watersheds.

After 17 years as one of Alaska’s most successful trade shows, the spring Alaska Women’s Show is dead. Aurora Productions, Inc., producer of the Alaska Women’s Show, was notified May 27th that the Municipality of Anchorage will not allow the event to be held in Sullivan Arena in April or May, due to a new “exclusive agreement” with the Alaska ACES hockey.

Sheraton GM Receives Death Threats and Hotel Loses Business

The Sheraton Anchorage Hotel & Spa has filed a complaint with the Regional Director of the National Labor Relations Board after General Manager Denis Artiles received death threats over a four-hour period on June 2nd. Eggs were thrown on Artiles’ door and he received numerous death threat phone calls between 1:30 and 5 a.m. on Wednesday. This is the second time Artiles has received death threats, the first time was in March this year.  Both incidents have been reported to the Anchorage Police Department.

Also last week, the Sheraton lost a key contract when the Louisiana Center for Women & Government cancelled its National Leadership Summit that was scheduled to be held at the hotel June 3-5. The meeting moved to the Anchorage Downtown Marriott (a non-union hotel) after event organizers wrote a letter to the Sheraton stating that “panelists/speakers and attendees received threatening phone calls from the labor union coordinator on May 25….”
